A weekly Salesforce report often looks like one task, but it is usually a chain of exports, filters, lookups, manual corrections, and presentation steps. Automating it starts with understanding that chain.
Map the report before rebuilding it
Document the source objects, fields, filters, spreadsheet formulas, owners, delivery schedule, and decisions attached to the report. This reveals which steps are true business rules and which exist only because the current workflow is manual.
Define each metric once
Sales teams frequently discover that the same metric has several definitions across reports. Before connecting a dashboard, agree on qualification rules, date logic, stage ownership, and how reopened or duplicate records are handled.
Build for exceptions
The system should not silently turn missing or inconsistent CRM data into a polished number. Flagging incomplete ownership, invalid stages, or stale opportunities gives the team a path to improve both the data and the decision.
Automate the operating cadence
Once validated, the report can refresh on the required schedule, preserve historical comparisons, notify owners about exceptions, and produce a leadership summary. The goal is not merely to remove the export. It is to remove the recurring coordination around the export.
